Mackie Onyx, FW card, iBook, corrupt recordings?

We've been recording & producing accoustic jazz sessions for about 5 years. Until recently we used a Motu 896HD, which was excellent. Then late last year we invested in a whole new setup. Mackie srm450's & a Mackie Onyx 1620 mixer with the FW card. We used the very reliable iBook that we allways used, ppcG4 os 10.4 1.2GHz and 768MB.ram. The DAW is cubase se1.0.7. Bad problems have arisen but they are not consistent. 2 out of the last 6 recording sessions have been corrupted on every track but in patches, the sound gets overlaid with a crackling sound or some very dirty white noise combined occasionally with a sort of delay. I thought it might be a latency problem but the settings are very reasonable & what we have allways used + we are not monitoring. When it's working the quality is very good for about 70% of the recording but then it's ruined by one of these patches.
Any ideas or similar experiences?
I'm hoping It's just me doing something dumb but I'm worried that our hard earned cash has been wasted on a lemon.
