Library Of Microphone Positions

Postby Mike Senior » Sat Nov 14, 2015 8:46 am

I've been slowly building up a new free educational resource over the last few years, and seeing as it's getting quite developed now, I figured I'd quickly post here to let more people know about it.

What I've done is create multimiked recordings of 20 different instruments to demonstrate the effects of microphone positioning. Unlike most other miking demos you'll find on the web, though, I've deliberately used multiples of the same mic on a single performance, so you can hear placement effects much more clearly.

Here's the link: Library Of Microphone Positions

The comparison files can be auditioned directly in-browser (alongside pictures of the miking setups for reference) at 192kbps MP3 quality, or downloaded as 24-bit/44.1kHz WAV files for more critical listening off-line.

So far the instrument line-up includes:

Many thanks to all the musicians, venues, distributors, and assistant engineers who've helped me put this all together. This is an on-going long-term project of mine, so stay tuned for more new instruments in the coming year. (Just been speaking to a sitarist, which could be cool...)

Hope you find the files useful!

Great work Mike. An extraordinarily useful resource that I'd urge people to check out.

Mods... might I humbly suggest that this is made a sticky, but in the Recording forum?

Hi Mike

A great job!

I've listenened to the grand piano setups - and for a good classical piano sound - and for setup 4 I liked B the best. I also liked A + D and B+C

For setup 5 I liked C the best, and prefered this one over the others. This was the sound of a classical piano recital that I like to hear on a broadcast or CD and what i try to achieve myself. I also note that I prefer omni for piano (and probably for most other instrumental recordings).

I realise that closer mics inside the lid may be best for Jazz and other groups, and even sometimes for piano concertos with full orchestra.

Fantastic work and a great resource. Well done and what dedication!

Well done Mike.

And yes Matt, that sounds like a good idea. I'll move it to Recording, leave a pointer here, and make it sticky.

I checked these out following your excellent workshops at AES (we had a brief discussion at one point, though I doubt you remember with all the goings ons!). This is a terrific resource.

I must admit my first thought was "the SM58 is on the top shelf at the back in the quantum gravity section".

But what a wonderful resource. So far all I have listened to is some of the acoustic guitar recordings, and that through my crappy headset at work. Even with that it is amazing how much difference you can hear between various of the mic positions and distances and equally amazing how little difference there is between others where one might have expected to hear large differences.

A whole hearted bravo.
