I think it's partially because Mackie made such a big fuss about the 'Perkins' (I thought they made diesel engines) EQ so for a desk, with a recording option, that's destined for home studios it's pretty stupid that you can't actually record the output of this supposedly great EQ.

Poisonally I think a desk like this needs to integrate well with a DAW if it's going to be useful in a home studio environment. Considering you can't mix the daw output on the onyx, and you can't record post eq, Mackie have missed an excellent opportunity to make a decent front end mixer. The Onyx is basically only good for preamps and line source submixing in a multi-track environment.
