SOS Technical Glossary

Postby Hugh Robjohns » Thu Aug 24, 2017 9:08 am

I am pleased to report that the SOS Technical Glossary has been found in the back of a cupboard, dusted off, and slotted back into the online archives.

https://www.soundonsound.com/sound-advi ... ical-terms
or
https://www.soundonsound.com/glossary

You can find it by typing Glossary into the search engine, and its terms should come up in search results.

There are plans to develop this resource substantially in the future, too... but in the meantime, we welcome any suggestions for other terms to be added.

Suggestion : Given that we are trying to use it correctly these days, Polarity could do with an entry. And possibly a 'see Polarity' addition to Phase.

I've added a few new entries to the technical glossary today, and I've a few more still to come...

 Thanks.
Have already spent 15 minutes browsing and learned a few new things :)
Please do add "Updated August 2017" to the posting date 'Published May 2003', so people who find it other than from this thread know it isn't stale content.

My ambition: To one day have enough experience to answer technical questions on the SOS forums, as well as asking them

Fair point. I just allocated it to the currently oldest past issue, whilst we develop a different way to offer the Glossary (all articles have to have a month/year issue publication date associated with them). I've changed it to the latest issue, so it now says September. ;-) (I'll update it every time we publish a new web issue.)

We've also added a GLOSSARY button on the grey secondary navigation menu on the home page, which everyone should bookmark, of course. ;-)

I wonder if there's some clever way of making it so that the first time a word that's in the glossary gets mentioned in an online article, it can be hovered over to show the glossary definition...?

You want the earth Chris. ;-) Unfortunately, the web team have more pressing demands in the coming months to sort before we can look into such niceties.

There will be ways to achieve it, and there are sites who use such linking practices to promote related advertising (personally, I avoid such articles like the plague) -- they usually show as dotted underlined words.

If you're claiming that as your main technical expertise then this is probably not the glossary that you'll be appearing in.
