Another Audio Interface Safari

Postby Trumpetman1234 » Thu Jan 04, 2018 10:47 pm

Hi all,

Happy New Year and all that!

I'm looking to update my Alesis io|14 and wonder if you good people can help me on my search?

The interface is great with good preamps and converters, but Alesis hasn't updated drivers for it so I am still running Mavericks and would like to upgrade my OS in order to get certain upgrades/plugins etc.

I have a mid 2011 iMac and need no more than 2 inputs but like the dual headphone output on the Alesis as well as the speaker outputs. My thunderbolt port is running a second screen at the moment but I'm sure I can free that up if needed, so I'm not particularly fussed about how it connects (thunderbolt, FireWire or USB).

I'm happy to spend £300 for the right interface but will stretch to £500 for something special!

Anyone got any recommendations?

As ever, thanks everso much!!

You can get a second hand Apollo Twin (Thunderbolt) for £500 or slightly less on ebay quite easily, and it's a very fine bit of kit that also opens the wacky world of UAD plugins to you.

The RME stuff is just out of your price range but might be worth looking at for second hand / sale stuff?

If you are upping your budget I would seriously think about RME.

Me again!!

Still tirelessly researching all of this!

Could anyone advise me if I would be able to daisy chain the following interface:

https://www.gear4music.com/Recording-an ... rbolt/1SWI

via thunderbolt on my mid 2011 iMac:

https://support.apple.com/kb/sp623?locale=en_GB

which already has a second display on that port?

Or is there an alternative solution?

As ever, thank you!!!

Thunderbolt is all about daisy-chaining. The Apollo Twins only have one Thunderbolt port. Therefore they have to be at the end of a Thunderbolt chain. So if your display has two Thunderbolt ports you can do it, otherwise you can't. For instance I have an LG 27MB85R Thunderbolt display which is daisy chained to an Apollo 8 which is in turn daisy chained to an Apollo Twin. But both the display and the Apollo 8 have 2 Thunderbolt ports so they can be daisy chained. The Twin has only one so it is the end of the chain.

Morning all!

Just as a follow up to all of this. It turns out there was a workaround for getting the io|14 to work in a more recent OS. Apparently the issue is due to the Alesis kernel extension for the device being rejected by the "System Integrity Protection" (which was introduced with El Capitan) because it is unsigned.

A little fiddling in terminal sorted it out and means that it's still up and running - for now....!

I'm still researching a new Interface but slightly less urgently!

Thanks again for all your advice

Great to be able to take your time. I would say that the more upmarket interfaces from UAD, RME, Apogee and the like cost more but really do tend to be better. And because that sort of kit doesn't tend to be mishandled then it's usually a good bet for second hand too. Best of luck and have fun in the search.
