Advice please: Akai ASQ10? Is this still a good buy?

Postby keelbolt » Fri Aug 10, 2018 10:02 am

I've been looking for a midi sequencer that isn't computer or DAW based for use in live gigs because of crashes on my laptop, and an Akai ASQ10 has just come up on Ebay for around £400.00. I know this is older gear, but does anyone have any advice please? Is this still a good sequencer to get?

The ASQ10 is the same sequencer found in the MPC60. Although a very powerful sequencer, I would look at upgrading the OS with Mansell Labs Vimana OS so that you can take advantage of direct 16-Channel MIDI recording from the DAW into the sequencer (perfect for live). They are rock solid sequencers that never crash, IMO. I would also suggest replacing the floppy drive with an HxC drive.

The OS lives on 2 eeproms. The original after sales OS was written by Mansell labs but unfortunately that business ceased trading. If you are based in the UK, there's a fella called Jazzcat on Facebook who does Akai servicing and he may be able to source them for you and advise you.

Looks like it's 4 ROMs for the 60. I have a 3000 and that had 2 ROMS.

I wouldn't purchase from eBay.
