Firewire Audio Interface HELP!

Postby kayontheup » Tue Aug 21, 2018 8:48 pm

Hi all,

Currently need some advice on on adapters and so forth.

I have a Fa-101 Edirol sound card (Firewire connection-6 Pin Female Port to 9 Male FW 800) but unfortunately, I have no Firewire ports on my MacBook Pro 2015.

Do you think the below will solve the problem?

Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter & Akord FireWire 400 to 800 6 pub Female Port to 9 Pin Male adapter.

In a word, yes. I've used the Apple Tbolt to FW adapter, which worked exactly as you'd hope it would, and I've used an 800 to 400 adapter cable with it without problems, though not the specific one you mention. So I think this should work fine.

Having said that, the FA-101 has been around for a while and Roland don't provide support forever, unfortunately. For instance, it's not possible to get drivers for the UA25 for the latest Mac OS versions, as I know to my regret, and I think the FA-101 is about the same vintage. So I'd check the driver situation carefully before I bought any cables for it.

Thanks for your advice. Will look into the driver situation.....would be such a waste if I have to buy a new one.

Hey,

Thanks for your reply. Just had a look on their website which says :

FA-101 Macintosh OS 9 Driver

This is the driver necessary for connecting the FA-101 to a Macintosh computer running OS 9.

Note: There is no driver necessary for Mac OS X. You must be running 10.3.7 or higher.

I'm hoping this is true!

Yes, 14 years old now... SOS reviewed the FA-101 in 2004 here: https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/edirol-fa101

That's very misleading as their website states that a driver isn't necessary for Mac OS X.

Or am I reading it wrong?

It's not misleading -- there is a class compliant Core Audio driver included in Mac OS itself, which presumably is what the interface uses, so there's no need to install a separate driver.

Whether it still works in current versions of Mac OS is anyone's guess, though -- FireWire has not been officially supported for several versions now.

Ah I see!

I'm going to give the adapters a try before spending money on a new soundcard.

Fingers crossed! :bouncy:

Thanks again!

OS X still has Firewire drivers, they just aren't being updated, so these should still work OK on older Apple hardware that had on-board FW.

That's a fair point about class compliance, it's one of the areas that's a real winner for Macs.

The latest Apple hardware still has Firewire - but it's the latest version that used the same connector as USB-C - adaptors are available to the earlier Firewire connectors.

No, it has Thunderbolt 3 on USB-C. That is not the same as FireWire, though it's supposed to be backwards compatible.

Oops - sorry - you are correct, of course.

I know I have seen tha adaptors from Firewire to the USB-C connectors, though.
