Re: pop percussion
Usually, I dip into a trunk I have in the studio and rummage among various 'bangy, rattly things' as my wife affectionately calls them, and then spend ages finding a mic'ing solution that works...
Failing that I use some of the various ethnic percussion samples that come bundled with Logic. But in my experience, the only way to get shakers, tambourines and similar to sound authentic is to play them.

Debut Album 'Fantasy Bridge' available now!

I have a Korg Wavedrum and it remains one of my better purchases. It's not in use all the time, but for those 'sugar and spice' percussion parts it really is the business. If you can run to one then I doubt you'd regret it.
One listen to 'Viking War Drum' and you won't want to part with it!

+1, picked one up recently. I hadn't realised the part that acoustic sounds played in the mix; nice gadget.

I just use percussion and a mic! If I *really* need something I don't have and the instrument is particularly large/expensive/skilled I'll look for samples or someone who has and can play the thing.

Shakers - I play them myself so I'd do that assuming you've got the mic. Apart from anything I think it gives a more natural/human sound, which includes timing.
Congas / other percussion. I use samples; there are other mags (not as good as SOS of course) which have free sample CDs and invariably there's some decent percussion on them every now and then. Those or Loopclooud would be my go-to's for this.
