Hello All,
I'm recording a Taiko drumming ensemble tonight. I was thinking of using 4 Rode NT5/55s, two cardioid and two omnis. I have other mic choices but I fear the incredibly loud instruments might damage more sensitive microphones.
Has anyone here ever recorded anything like this?
Thanks,
Peter

Re: Recording a Taiko Ensemble
My approach would be to record them as an ensemble using a stereo array or variation on such. I’m currently enjoying using an array that comprises of an ORTF pair with A/B omni outriggers. Your NT5/55 combination would be perfect for this set up.
The idea is to let the ensemble balance themselves, but you could spot mic elements if necessary. Of course to record inanice acoustic would be advantageous.
