unbalanced XLR input

I have an unbalanced XLR input on my Studiospares DI box. I have never used it and can't think of a situation where I would. Am I missing something?

It's an oddity isn't it? I guess the XLR has the benefit of more security/reliability than the jack input, but there's no other benefit I can think of.

It is probably a hangover from the old days when electronic components were more expensive than they are now so some manufacturers used unbalanced XLR connections rather than pay for additional balanced line drivers/receivers.
