Recreating nostalgic 80s synth effects from a track

Hi all

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this but here it goes.

I am listening to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mvZ-FjdgLw and love the way it sounds.

Can someone please shed some light on how one can achieve similar sounds that evoke similar emotions like oldschool melancholic nostalgia? Specifically, which effects, filters, etc. can do that?

So far I can make sense of some LFO controlling a pitch bend, maybe controlled by an envelope. I work primarily in Massive VST.

All help is appreciated.

There's a lot of backwards sounds there, so you need to record some fairly lo-fi sounds and then play them backwards.

Just learn your tools and get a good grasp of basic synthesis/sampling. After that you'll be equipped to recreate that kind of piece pretty easily.

Five notes on a piano recorded dry with no effects, in the right context could make you sob with emotion. This question is, in a way, impossible to answer.
I do know what you mean though, sometimes a piece of music makes a connection, and being a musician the impulse is to try and recreate that feeling or emotion again, yourself.
It's best to avoid this, you'll be jumping on someone else's band wagon, and faking it.
Ultimately you have to find your voice, one that conveys your emotions, and that can be done in an infinite number of ways, you just have to experiment like all of us, until you find that voice.
