Unidyne S55 (Elvis mic)

Postby CS70 » Thu Aug 22, 2019 2:38 pm

Hei all,

for a music video, we’ve decided to use an unidyne mic - just for the looks. Can probably find a body shell to use as a prop, but what’s the collective wisdom about the mic? Is it worth having for recording (given that it’s unlikely I will ever use it on stage)?

I have never tried it so no idea how it compares to run of the mill dynamic mics like the 57 or 58 or my old AKG D3000 (which is hypercardioid)

Thanks!

We bought one for a video too... And we've used it in a couple of live situations for that 'vintage' vibe.

As a mic it's OK. It has a fairly pronounced presence peak and is a bit 57-esque in it's sound.

The biggest drawback we found was that the gain before feedback is a lot worse than a 57/58. But if you're managing stage volumes well it can look great on stage :)

I've been told that the Super 55 deluxe is all around a better mic. But that's a fairly expensive outlay for a prop!

Found a nice metal shell for 30 bucks, guess that'll be it :-)
