Personally I find Reaper's standard meters are fine - I just aim for nominal levels to be about half way up the meters which gives you at least 18dB of headroom.

You're right, I made the mistake of using the 12dB point as my nominal level.

Brilliant! - Just changed that setting on my Reaper template, as it makes far more sense from a dynamics/visual point of view.
