Neumann Mics Home or abroad ?

Postby Scouser » Mon Sep 02, 2019 2:58 pm

Hi Folks,

I'm thinking of buying a single Neumann KM184 wasn't sure if I would get a better deal buying abroad or buying here in the UK. A friend mentioned that he bought one from the states and saved a few bob even after paying VAT.

It always worries me a little, buying abroad as it seems completely random, how much duty VAT you pay on an item ?

Cheapest I have seen in UK is around £540

Normally 3% duty and 20% VAT on item cost + duty + shipping cost, and then a customs handling charge from the couriers or the PO.

Prices I'm seeing in the US for a new KM184 are north of $850. With the weak pound, that's over £700 without shipping and VAT etc.!

UK seems far the cheapest place at the moment. Even Thomann are about £90 more expensive than your quoted UK price.

Whether or not it's convenient, it really depends on your country (in Norway, it almost invariably there's money to save for most things worth buying), but if you by from reputable source there's nothing to be worried about in buying abroad more than you would by buying locally but receiving the goods by mail.

Always buy in your own country!

Buying in the US will add shipping charges, duty, agent fees and then 20% VAT added to the price.

Also - as your guarantee is with the retailer, any problems you will have to ship the mic. back to the US.
