Auto align -is it necessary ?

Postby mammy » Mon Sep 09, 2019 5:14 pm

You know that when you record an instrument with seperate two microphones it is being delay time and phase different between the microphones.there is a plugin called Auto align.somebody told me auto align kills the dynamic of the instrument.he said that dont use it.
Im confused .what should ı do not ??

I thought you’d left the SOS forum!!!
In answer to your question, when a sound wave hits two microphones there’s always a very good chance that there will be a slight time delay between each microphone picking up that sound, but because it’s such a tiny difference in time you will get ‘comb filtering’ artefacts when the two microphones are combined by the mixer, this results in some frequencies being boosted in level and others cancelling each other out.
Therefore you do need an auto align plugin to match the timing and phase of the two microphones, or you experiment with moving just one of the microphones until you get the sound you want.

Yes, as above - unless the two microphones are a stereo pair set for stereo recording.

Or you simply align one mic track with the other manually in your DAW. Easy to do, takes seconds and there's no chance of a plug-in misaligning the two tracks.

Exactly as Mr Wonk said (omg I've caught Basil Brush-itis). Just line up the waveforms in your DAW. More importantly use your ears. Sometimes an out of phase sound is preferable, in a busy mix for example the thinner sound might be just the ticket.

But as with many things to do with recording and mixing, don't worry about it until you can hear the problem. Gazillions of hugely successful recordings have been made on tape with little more than a phase reverse switch to call on. Is it better in or out? Move on....
