A recording of the noise would help but it's possible that if it's not been stored correctly it may be affected by condensation.
Put it somewhere warm and dry for a couple of days and see if it improves.

Have you got another mic to rule out the interface itself being faulty? If the other mic is quiet and normal sounding, then it will be the AT2020.

Does the hissing noise go away when the mic is unplugged (turn the volume down when plugging or unplugging though). Do you have phantom power switched on?

If the hissing goes away when the mic is unplugged I would suspect moisture or contamination in the microphone. It would be worth leaving it in a warm and dry place (like an airing cupboard) for a few days to let it dry out. Some people suggest putting mics in a bag of dry rice or silica gel to remove the moisture. If that doesn't work then the mic probably needs to be repaired by an experienced technician. In that case it may be worth contacting Audio Technica to see what they would charge for a repair.

As much as a new 2020 I'd imagine!

What is the make and model of the audio interface?

The audio interface is a M-Audio Fast Track USB Audio Interface - Audio Interface

If you have the same noise (or more) without mic, it's unlikely to be the mic?

You do have phantom power on, right? (and turn it off when plugging/unplugging the mic?)
And when you "unplug" the mic - does that mean unplugging the cable from the FastTrack preamp, right (after having switched off phantom power)?

If the answer is yes to both, looks like the interface preamp may be faulty.
