I've just recently upgraded my audio interface to a Motu 828ES recently because I needed more I/O. The 828ES has two pre-converter hard wired sends for connecting outboard processors and I'm wondering what is the best way for me to set up my preamps and compressors?
At the moment I've got the output of my preamps running directly into the compressors and then into the Motu 828ES inputs but I'm wondering if there are any differences regarding audio quality/noise floor etc?

Your inserts will be after the channel's mic pres, so they are best used for outboard that isn't first going through an external mic pre. Otherwise if you use an external mic pre with or without a compressor, you might as well use a line-in and make use of the balanced connections. An insert point will be using unbalanced connections.
