Looking for programmable digital voice or sound recorder which will record based on a date/time

Postby eldiiener » Tue Oct 22, 2019 4:54 am

I am looking for a digitial voice or sound recorder which will automatically record sound at given date/times for a certain period of time. In other words I am looking for recorder for which I can set arbitrarily start times and time durations for recording. Does anybody know if such a digitial voice recorder or digital sound recorder exists ?

I would also like the functionality in such a voice/sound recorder which would enable me to start and stop recordings from a distance, maybe through bluretooth or wifi from my Android phone or some other device, without having to physically start and stop such a recorder by pressing the record or stop button on the recorder itself.

I have a feeling that the type of digital voice/sound recorder I am looking for exists, but I find it nearly impossible to find such a device from the descriptions I read about digital voice or sound recorders online.

Your requirement may be too specialised to imagine it being programmed into a general recording application, but maybe you could create an automated, timed script to run that will generate key-presses to do what you want? It's not something I have much experience of (though I have used such tools in the distant past), but others may be able to chip in here?

I don't know of any pro-audio recorders with timer functions, but several have remote control options -- either wired or via bluetooth. The Sound Devices MixPre machines, for example.

This sounds more like something covert... for which there may be legal restrictions or implications depending on country and intended purpose, of course... so you might be better approaching a supplier of 'spyware'. :silent:

Here's a phone app based timed recording device. https://appdron.com/voice-recorder-sche ... -recorder/

But it might help to know what you want to record and from what distance, so we know what sort of mic and recorder you are likely to need.

This is a long shot but perhaps a company that manufactures cameras that activate with motion might have something? Those cameras are usually for the outdoors so you can see what creatures come through the woods when nobody is around. I assume they also have sound. I don’t know if they have WiFi or Bluetooth.

Like Nagra Audio

They do specialised equipment for this - on hidden pages on their website, so you will have to talk with them first to see if they do anything that fits your requirement.

But oddly enough this is exactly what a video recorder would do. When I had a hifi video connected to the rest of my hifi system I would tune the hifi into the station that I wanted to record and then program times on the video to capture the programme that I wanted to hear.

A quick search brings up plenty of Android apps that offer this feature.

I am not looking for an application but a hardware digital recording device which allows the user to set the time and time duration for recording. It seems odd to me that no digital voice recorder devices and no digital sound recording devices would have what to me seems like a fairly simple feature. After all every computer under the sun runs operating systems that allow the end-user to specify that certain tasks occur at certain times. Maybe I am just asking too much for digital recorders to have such a feature, although computers have had them for ages.

I am not looking to do anything covert and I am not spying on anyone even via audio conversations. I just need a recording device that can automatically record at specific time and for specific durations. I am a bit surprised that what seems to me a really basic technology does not exist at all in the sound recording world.

I guess I do not think of my cell phone as a reliable sound recording device ( I have a motog6 running Android ), but I will look into it. Thanks for the suggestion !

If cameras have such a feature as timed activation one would think that sound recorders might also. I am not looking for a camera at all as I am just looking to record sounds. Thanks for the suggestion !

I am not looking for spyware and I am not "spying" on other people's conversations.

I admit I have never thought of my cellphone, motog6 running Android, as a reliable digital voice/sound recorder. When I listen to sound on my cellphone it is really, really bad compared to even the few fairly simple digital voice recorders I have bought in the past. So I do not think my cellphone can really serve the purpose I need, which is a fairly accurate recording of sound where I live. I guess there is still a hug divide between computerized cellphones and digital voice/sound recorders, although I admit that I was hoping that divide had been closed by companies putting out sound recording devices by now.

Plenty of broadcast journalists now use mobile phones as high-quality voice recorders -- but usually by connecting a decent mic rather than using the internal one(s).

I know timed recording seems a simple facility, and in many ways it is... but it's just not something for which there's great demand in the audio world. There are plentiful applications in still cameras and for videos, obviously, but not so much for audio where mic placement relative to the recorded subject is critical.

I think a video recorder with a versatile timing facility might provide the solution you are looking for...

Alternatively, if this is for noise monitoring purposes, professional (calibrated) sound level measuring equipment usually has time-stamped logging facilities. You probably wouldn't want to buy as it's very expensive, but this kind of equipment can be hired from specialist companies. If you do want to buy, the least expensive I am aware of is the NTI Acoustilyser system.

There are plenty of audio interfaces that will work with phones so it looks like the best solution would be to combine an suitable audio interface (like the Zoom U22 as an example) with with a cheap Android smart phone.

However, if this is for noise monitoring purposes you may need some way to calibrate the system.

Even so, that is the world where you’ll find that sort of recorder, so you may have to buy from Q’s lab :D

Thanks ! I will look into getting an external mic for my cellphone with some software which can drive it to record at specific times and for specific durations. Looking at NTI's web site the Acoustilyser is not listed as a product.

I have a moto g6 Android cellphone. I guess the thing to do is to look for some sort of audio interface and corresponding software to turn my cellphone into a recording device which can automatically record at specific times and for specific durations. I have no experience with cellphone audio interfaces so i will just have to investigate things and come up with what I want. Your Zoom U22 does not say it works with Android so I will keep looking.

Apologies; it appears to have been replaced by the XL2

The Zoom U44 definitely works with Android devices (although I've only been able to record in mono with mine so far) so I would be very surprised if the U22 didn't.
