Which LUFS meter to trust: Logic, Metric AB or Ozone?

Postby Dr Huge Longjohns » Thu Oct 31, 2019 12:49 pm

So, Logic's loudness meter tells me a track has an integrated LUFS value of -19.0 with a true peak of -3.5, Metric AB says it's -18.9 and -3.5, so close enough for rock n roll.

But Ozone says it's -13.8 with a TP of -2.8.

So why is the Ozone LUFS meter reading so wildly different? I thought LUFS were LUFS, there aren't difference ways to measure them are there? Or am I missing something here?

How are you setting up the metering?

For instance, if you had a Logic meter on the master bus, then after that, you have Ozone, but Ozone is doing some additional compression/limiting, then the figures will (of course) differ...

Also, there are a lot of metering options, scales and settings in Ozone - what are you using?

I'm using the LUFS Integrated setting on the Ozone output. I have Ozone on the track and the meters on Logic's output master.

So you're metering two different signals?

Are you doing any processing with Ozone?

I quickly tested a bunch of meters (on the master output channel of a test project), including iZotope stuff and got readings within .1dB across them all, so there's something weird going on there for you...

That's a big error... and, like Desmond, my first thought is that you have a level offset somewhere between the Ozone plugin and your other meter. Faders not at unity? Odd panning issue?

What do the true peak meters show if you run a standard line up tone through the signal path?

There is a comprehensive set of test files on the EBU Tech website which can be used to evaluate the accuracy of LUFS metering:

Well, as I say, Ozone's on the track, the meters are on the stereo buss.

I'll try the test tracks.

I'd recommend putting another Ozone on the master, after Logic's loudness meter, make sure all the processing is turned off, and check the LUFS again...

Don't have it with me right now but I vaguely recall Ozone having three different modes of BS.1770 loudness, could it be that you have inadvertently selected the 3-seconds one?
