DAV BG1 Pre into MixPre-3 (Original version)

Postby Ariosto » Mon Jan 13, 2020 4:18 pm

I'm just wondering about using my DAV BG1 pre to increase the gain when using a low output (1.0 mV/Pa = -60 dBV) Beyer M102 dynamic mic. It (the M201) seems to work OK straight into the MixPre but I want to just check that it would be OK to go from mic into DAV and then from DAV into say channel 1of the MixPre using an XLR lead with the female connector?

I did this on my old Tascam and it was fine.

Well stop wondering!

The MixPre-3 preamps have 96dB of gain available (or 76dB plus 20dB fader headroom in the Advanced mode).

If that's not enough either someone has stolen the capsule from your M201 (I assume that's the mic model you mean?), or you've placed it in a different room... :wtf:

Er... yes... it would!

... but I want to just check that it would be OK to go from mic into DAV and then from DAV into say channel 1 of the MixPre using an XLR lead with the female connector?

You could take the line output of the DAV preamp into the line input of the MixPre-3 if you really wanted to ... there's no problem with signal levels ... but it would probably be slightly noisier than going direct. And as the Mixpre has 30dB more gain available than the DAV preamp anyway I really don't see any benefit.

Thanks Hugh for that quick and expert reply. I will continue use as before - I just thought the DAV was sitting there and I would like to use it, but obviously it's best to just go straight into the MixPre 3 with the M201 for the lowest noise. (I have been recording a singer [tenor] and thought it might boost his voice if we do more takes, but he doesn't really need it anyway, as he can be quite loud most of the time).

Definition of an operatic tenor methinks
