Mismatch in tempos?

Postby john@franklinroadstudio » Wed Jan 29, 2020 12:54 am

So...
Playing in a drum pattern from an Alesis SR-16 drum machine @ 100bpm against a 100bpm click in Audacity.
They start together but after a minute or so they're not in synch??

Are you running these thing free of any clocking? No two DAWs are ever going to be absolutely spot on - expecting an old drum machine to adhere to absolutely precise BPM timings is optimistic at the least.

Or are you clocking the drum machine from your DAW?

You have two choices...

- send a MIDI clock to the drum machine from the DAW to keep them in sync
- program the drums in your DAW and just use the drum machine as a sound module.

I pretty much always take the latter approach.

I don't think I've ever had two MIDI devices keep in sync for as long as a minute without using a MIDI clock of some kind, though some are better than others.

You're basically asking two drummers to stay in time with each other. What can you expect? ;)

Especially if they can neither hear each other nor talk to each other, the clock allows the devices to 'talk' to each other.

I remember seeing Dave Edmunds with guests such as Dion and Graham Parker in the early 1990's IIRC, and they used two drummers, both doing the same thing...i.e. it wasn't one playing more of a percussion role, they were both nailing it. Absolutely brilliant. Seems to work pretty well "live" although nothing really strayed far from 4/4. And they didn't talk to each other, they just looked at each other and nodded a lot. But it was damn good.
