Audacity Replacements

Postby Chambo » Thu Feb 06, 2020 10:58 am

Not sure if this is the right place fo0r this, but I often get solid advice.
I tend to use Audacity to work with small Audio files, but with the most recent upgrade of the Mac OS it won't even load.

Are there any other half decent pieces of software that people can recommend. Don't even mind on off payments - it's part of my workflow when I'm recording and 'editing'.

Reaper is inexpensive, Cakewalk is currently free. Both are far more sophisticated than Audacity and capable of the highest quality results. My preference is for Reaper simply because it's what I started to use when I returned to using computers for recording (after many years using hardware recording systems) ten or more years ago.

I'll have a look at Reaper again, I end to go back and forth between Ableton and Audacity.
I suppose you get used to small tools which do a small job on editing quickly.

Audacity doesn't currently support Catalina. I presume it will do at some point.

Can I recommend DSP-Quattro? Superb piece of software, relatively inexpensive at $99 for what it does and a very responsive developer.

I'll second the recommendation for DSP-Quattro. Excellent software, and the support has been superb for many years.

Now I just need him to port it to Linux... :geek:

A second vote for investigating Reaper and Cakewalk - both very capable bits of software and reasonably priced / free.

I'd investigate getting a PC. Its only a matter of time before a future Mac OS update renders all the suggestions here inoperative.

There’s nothing wrong with GarageBand if you’re on a mac. And it’s free...

And I guess Audacity will catch up soon enough.

The latest Audacity 2.3.3, works fine with Catalina. Sounds like you might have an older build that's 32-bit rather than 64-bit

Catalina?

Audacity still does not support macOS Catalina properly, but can be used with a workaround. This is because we have not caught up with Apple’s requirements for ‘notarization’ yet. We are working on this for the next release.

Details of the workaround here:

I fear this applies to many companies. Cataline has not been well thought out or implemented.
