Again... I don't think anyone was demeaning the SM58 (or the 57 for that matter).

My comments were:

1. Don't remove the grilles (doing so risks more harm than good)
2. If you want 57s, then sell the 58s and buy 57s.
3. Personally, if I wanted general purpose dynamics I'd look elsewhere to the 57, with my personal favourite in that role being the M201... But there are many options, some at similar prices, some cheaper, and some more expensive, all with different characteristics.

Just for the record I own one SM57s and one Beta 57... (but no SM58s)... and three M201s.

Just to throw another wrench into things, I prefer an Audix i5 on most things to a 57 or 58 at the same price, and for an extra 20 bucks the Heil pr20ut is another great option to have in the locker, sometimes it's just the ticket on a snare, but it's a more likely candidate for vocals than a 57 or i5, imo. I'd rather have one (or more) of each than a whole slew of identical mics.

Sorry guys I didnt mean to start a disagreement.

To be clear: I have better dynamic mics for snare and amps - I’ve got 2 M201s, a Heil PR40 and 20 and an MD441 - I’d take any of them over a 57. I find the 57 fizzy and hyped on gtr amps, though I know other people like them.

My question wasn’t what is the best dynamic mic to use? it was simply a questionable about whether I cold take the top off my 58s and would they then react like 57s.

So Hugh, thanks for getting to the point. Yes Ill probably sell the 58s to a local gigging band or something because I simply dont use them. J
