USB master keyboard with Midi out socket?

Postby Arpangel » Tue Feb 18, 2020 11:25 am

These beasts seem to be very rare these days, I just need a 61 note master keyboard, with a few knobs, and and a Midi out socket, lots of USB only ones around, but no Midi, any recommendations welcome.

I use a M Audio and it has a standard DIN midi in/out as well as the ubiquitous usb. Nice action too for synths.

Just use the filter functions on Thomann. All these should have at least one hardware MIDI output.

I have a Novation SL Mk2 and that has midi out etc. It has the best keybd action I have come across for the money.

Be careful.

The midi out can be a general midi out, or be bound to the incoming usb stream. OK, most are the former, but the latter does exist. And with many keyboards, if you power over usb, the midi output is disabled. This is why I have an Novation SL mkii for use with my Kronos (which allows class compliant midi over usb), but use a Novation Impulse with my Kurzweil (which supplies power to the Impulse over usb, but doesn't accept midi, so I also use a standard midi cable). The Impulse allows me to power over usb and also use the midi output, the SL does not.

Thanks, I probably won’t use the USB if it’s got Midi out.

Me too - I'm not keen on the action of the drum pads, but the keyboard feels great!

Yeah, the pads aren't great. I wonder if the Mk3 has improved on this....

I actually got on far better with the pads on the Korg Nanopad that I retired after buying the Novation SL MkII.

The only one I’ve found that ticks all of my boxes is the M-Audio Code 61, semi weighted keys, Midi plus USB out, and some controller knobs, but I really don’t need those drum pads.

Could come in handy Tone. You don't have to use the pads for drum sequencing. Quite often you can use them to trigger events, sequences, effects etc...
