Could come in handy Tone. You don't have to use the pads for drum sequencing. Quite often you can use them to trigger events, sequences, effects etc...

Thanks Zukan, I’ll order the Code 61.

Or use them as layer active indicators and on/off switches.

I guess I could use them to trigger synth loops in Ableton?

I see no reason why not, but I don't use Ableton, so...

I can it looks, Ableton is one of those programs I keep meaning to make use of, but never do.

I have it, but have never got to grips with it - haven't even installed it on my newest studio PC. When you have to keep the work flowing it's hard to find time to learn a whole new DAW, and I still get the impression that Live is biased towards dance/loop-based music, which is not my thing, so may not represent the best use of my time.

Clip view in Ableton is potentially very powerful, no matter what music we make, I like putting together lots of contrapuntal lines, and mixing them live, Live could be a breakthrough for me, but, as you say, and I agree, it’s more to learn, and it takes time, which at the moment I’m not prepared to invest in.

This master keyboard thing isn’t an easy choice, regardless of price.
It seems a lot of them have masses of stuff ai don’t need, and would never use.
I’m looking at the MidiPlus X6;MK11, and it has everything I need, just enough knobs, and a hardware Midi out, I like it’s simplicity too, the other contender is the M Audio Code 61 but that’s covered in "stuff" I won’t use, but I am paying for.
Still undecided.

Slight change of mindset required, 'covered in extra stuff I'm getting for free and may use in the future' perhaps?

Because I’ve got rid of most of my gear, I’m even considering not getting a keyboard at all, a different mind set?
The only hardware synths I own now are a Novation A-Station, and an Alesis Micron, I could use the Micron to control the a-Station, and my soft synths.
Electronics and sorting them out is becoming a bit of a pain, and it has been for a long time, do I actually need to play anymore? I’ve put together four unedited albums that have been sitting in my computer for about six months, my first job should be to edit those and master them, not start playing again, that'll take my body of work up to 40 CD's.
I’ve become majorly distracted by our piano, and I think it’s all I need now. I’m trying to get back into electronics simply because I’ve been doing it for years, and that’s not a good reason to continue with anything.

Well, I just bought a Behringer UMX610 controller from GAK.
So problem over, I have to have something, and this seems like a good, cheap solution, with no superfluous bells and whistles I won’t use.
