"Protube" microphone with Neumann-like logo

Postby CS70 » Fri Jul 03, 2020 12:41 pm

Just came about this, apparently a U47 clone. From a company named "Protube" and a badge identical to Neumann's (only with "Protube" instead).

The only mention I found when googling was a 2010 post with a person asking if anyone knew anything about the brand, and that he'd heard rumors that a group of Neumann engineers had gone solo and set up the company. No replies were ever posted.

The mic itself should be probably 20 years old or something in that range. Maybe more, as no internet information seem to exist.

I like a mistery (almost as much I like mics) so I got curious but my little attempt at research returned zip.

Since some people in the forum have been at it way longer than myself.. has anyone ever heard of Protube - with a lawsuit-worth Neumann like logo? Crap chinese fake or undiscovered gem?

No come across it I'm afraid.

Neumann/Sennheiser are pretty hot on protecting their intellectual property and logos/trademarks etc, so it's not surprising that a 'clone' that was that blatantly close to 'passing off' would disappear fairly quickly.

Yeah, it's so blatantly a rip off logo that lawyers would have been faster to jump in than a fox into a hen house.

It rings a very faint bell, but I can’t put my finger on it. What does it sound like?

I have no idea. I'm gonna check it out if I can.

Apparently it was a sort of custom job, from some outfit specialized in Neumann clones.
They obviously cloned everything down to the logo.

Not sure if it goes d o n g however :D

If you want a U47 "clone" that is as close to the original as possible - get a FLEA

Thanks John, actually I don't. I do not really know how a U47 sounds as I've never used one.. so I cannot say that I particularly want it, or a copy.

It is just the mistery of a mic with a nearly-identical Neumann logo - something guaranteed to produce a lawsuit - and the fact I cannot find any trace of the brand anywhere..

Well, if it’s got Pro on the Logo it’s got to be good, obviously taken a leaf out of Behringers book.

I made a passing comment about one once on a brass band forum (where someone had misspelt Neumann on purpose when he was probing at someone talking about charging people for recording them when he quite clearly had no idea what he was doing)...and the company owner registered specifically so he could comment on the post...

Actually I owned one for a while. They were selling the mics for £250 each on ebay, which meant a heck of a lot of quite decent microphone for your money. I think history showed that the name was a mistake, though. Every review always started with a discussion of The Name and in the end it obscured the quality of the mics themselves. There's a lesson there for other companies, I think.
