What mic is that?

Postby Len » Fri Jul 03, 2020 7:02 pm

Hi all - I was intrigued by the microphones used in https://theviolinchannel.com/violinist-james-ehnes-announces-recitals-from-home-series-bach-ysaye/?fbclid=IwAR1AGdB9BeIuaRLxtVNrqJuqinHNnDH44OGGtSuxU1rb1CA18OlQTngCs5w. Looks like a Telefunken M-60 from the back, but what on earth are those glass bulbs over the microphone capsule?

Many thanks for anyone who can educate me on that.

The acrylic balls are called APEs or Acoustic Pressure Equalisers, and they are used with omnidirectional capsules to alter the on-axis frequency response and polar pattern, effectively making the mic slightly directional at mid and high frequencies, which enhances the stereo image when used in a spaced array.

The idea is mostly associated with the classic Neumann M50, and it played a significant role in the effectiveness of the Decca Tree stereo mic array.

DPA and Microtech Gefell both sell APEs of various diameters as accessories for some of their omnidirectional mics, but most are black, and the only company I know that uses clear acrylic APEs is Telefunken, specifically for the M260, and included in the Tri-mono kit which is intended to replicate the classic tree setup.

Wow Hugh that is fascinating. I can't believe I've never seen them before, but so happy I learned something new today. Thank you!

I was thinking those mics were M-60s but they are probably ELAM M 260s then.

Thank you again!

The M60 and M260 use the same interchangeable capsules, so the APE spheres probably fit either model, but whichever mic it is it would definitely be fitted with the Tk61 omni capsule -- so the M61 omni FET possibly. However, I've not seen the APEs listed as general accessories, only as an inclusion in the tri-mono kit.

The DPA website describes the effects of different sizes of APEs quite well, and the principles translate to other similar sized omni mic capsules:
