Zoom H5 as audio interface with lavalier

Postby badbishop » Mon Sep 21, 2020 7:29 am

I've tried to use a Zoom H5 recorder as audio interface to a PC with a cheap lavaliere microphone, and failed. The lav was attached to the standard XY microphone block.

Narrowing the problem down.

Lav works well, when I record to Zoom H5 directly.

Audacity on a Windows PC records OK with Zoom's XY mics, but the sound is weak: I need to put the input level on Zoom H5 to 10, and to keep the device no further than about 10 cm from my mouth.

Of course, I've checked the device is selected, both in OS and Audacity.

I'm fairly new to sound recording. What am I missing here?

Welcome!

You say that the lav mic was connected to the H5 via an XLR input. Has the mic got an XLR plug or did you use an adapter? If so, what was the adapter?

And when you record directly to the H5 are you still using an XLR socket?

When you say the audio was weak, do you just mean the level was low?
