You can post images here, but they are not hosted on the SOS site so you need to upload your photo to an online image hosting service that allows images to be linked. I use Flikr, but there are many others.

Once you have uploaded to your image host you have several options, depending on what they offer. Some hosts have an option to create a link complete with the BBCode, you can just cut and paste it straight into your post here. Other options might require you to insert a link using the Img tags here.

Unfortunately, using your profile pic as a get-around doesn't work as it is only a thumbnail sized image.

Arh, Yeah I just found that out to my peril.

Okay, what I have done is saved the picture as my Profile pic on my SoundCloud here;

https://soundcloud.com/gfbruce

If you click on that link the picture is in the circle and it's full size so you can actually see it.

Those image sharing things want me to sing up n all that chatter.

No idea! I ditched anything to do with tape as soon as I heard the words 'Digital 8-track'! :D

This looks rather like some of the oxide is coming off the tape.

There are two things I can think of. One is a combination of degraded tape formulation and maybe excessive pressure from the pinch roller.

The other possibility is one of the earlier guides has a sharp edge that is loosening the oxide so it's easily deposited on the capstan.

Do you have another completely different make of tape you can try?

I have the guy who serviced it coming round Thursday and he is bringing his tape.

It was a brand new tape. I seem to remember I took the dust cap off AFTER I used the tape for the first time and gave everything a clean.

I only used the tape around 4 times before I cleaned absolutely everything, don't know if I've ballsed it up doing that.

I did clean everything though and it did seem to work okay, still a lot of dirt coming onto the capstan but rarely anywhere else, and tbh, the heads always come back with a clean tip, I've never took any huge amount of dirt off those heads, just the capstan.

Which picture are we looking at? Drew's uploaded picture only shows the back side of the heads and guides. We need to see the front side where the tape travels including the pinch roller and capstan shaft.

In that picture what might appear to be the capstan shaft is actually the back side of a tape guide designed to substitute for a third head used in another Teac/Tascam machine, such as the Tascam 38. Its role is to maintain the tape's angle as it travels over the head next to it. AFAIK the TSR-8 is only a 2 head machine.

And as that's probably the first static surface that the tape meets as it passes across the heads, it is going to attract most of the loose oxide.

Yes but the back of the guide is not the place to look for evidence of shedding any more than is the back of a tape head. We need to see the face. Perhaps the OP assumed that being a capstan shaft, it rotates, so any sector is as good as another for viewing but it isnt a capstan shaft and doesnt rotate. Best to take a photo looking directly at the head and guide faces from the front. The machine may need to be laid carefully on its back for this.
