Don't know have a cd/dvd drive in my new mac so thought I might get an external portable one. Are the £20 ones on Amazon OK for simple CD/dvd burning/playing? Any recommendations welcome, naturally. Cheers

Last year I bought one for the same purposes. I got a Lite-on CD/DVD external drive, the label on the back says the model is ES1-01.

Had no problems transferring about 500 CDs onto iTunes. And don't worry, I retained all the original CDs.

Ive just done a quick search and it looks like LiteOn and LG are the only people currently making optical drives. You can still buy Plextor drives but, since the brand is now owned by LiteOn (for storage at least), you might as well just buy the LiteOn equivalent. Other brands seem to just rebadge LG and LiteOn drives as far as I can see.

I haven't done any tests on the newer drives but the Samsung slimline drive in my laptop produces decent quality discs when I test them with Plextools.

The ultra slim LiteOn drive has been fine here, which would guess is the one being discussed.
Seem to read/write just fine.

Just in case you end up doing any archiving in the future, it might be worth paying a few extra quid for a drive that's compatible with M-Discs.

Long lasting archive quality disc;

drives aren't that much more expensive, e.g.

Andy, this one?

Looks exactly like mine.

And the label on the back reports it is M-Disc as well.

Do these usb self-powered ones work fine through a powered hub or do you need to plug them into the mac itself?

I've only used it plugged direct to the iMac & MBP. Haven't used a powered hub yet.

Just a heads up, I bought an ASUS one a couple of years ago that came with a USB cable with two plugs on the computer end, presumably as it wants more juice. Anyway, every time I used it there was a disconcerting odour of unhappy electronics in the region of the USB ports, so I chucked it in the cupboard and never used it again. Never got round to trying it with a powered hub, but my shiny new mac didn't like it.

And to add to my previous post this is the exact one I have, https://www.ebuyer.com/660938-liteon-sl ... ebau108-11
Supports M-Disc and all the usual CD/DVD formats.
