We've already established what a 'proper' balanced output is... and it has nothing to do with the output level! It's entirely to do with matched (balanced) impedances and nothing else!

What you're talking about is the advantage of a symmetrical output...

In my world, things get less strange when I read the manual...

 Same here, mate. Sorry if it didn't come across.

This has all made me think, though. I can honestly say that synths without balanced outputs are definitely in the minority here (15 balanced out of 27!). That has never occurred to me until now! :headbang:

Some I had to check the manual (some don't say, so I'm assuming they're unbalanced in my count), but I'm using all balanced cables regardless, so it makes no practical difference - interesting though.

That's a fair few synths

30 is a nice round number though...

Oh, don't worry on that score - it will be well past 30 by mid-year!

(and I forgot to count some of my rack synths, including the Jupiters and the 'no-room-for-it' desktop modules, so I'm actually well over 30 already...)

My name is Elf and I am a synth-addict...

My set-up isn’t very big, and all of my hardware synths are unbalanced, I have one a Novation A-Station, which won’t output any sound at all if you insert a balanced cable.
A lot of my stuff is made up of guitar pedals, all unbalanced.
I ran balanced stuff unbalanced for ages, and wasn’t aware of any audible difference, although cable lengths were only 2/3 meters.
However, when I did rewire, the biggest and definitely noticeable difference came from using foil screened cable for most things, it was quieter, I noticed the difference straightaway, even with my cable lengths.
