Warm Audio 87 R2 or Austrian Audio OC18

Postby herecomesthemoon » Sat May 01, 2021 1:22 pm

I am in two minds between which mic to get?

Mainly for vocals and acoustic instruments.

Cheers

Only you can make the decision. Both are very good mics, so it's down to personal preference.

I'd prefer having the omni, cardioid and fig-8 patterns of the WA 87 to the cardioid only OC18 if I was looking for a vocal + instrument mic. But if I wanted a really versatile mic (WRT polar patterns), then I'd consider spending more for the OC818.

But then you could get the WA 87 and the very nice WA 14 for a similar price to the OC818.

The choices never stop.

I have a pair of OC818 and I think that they’re fantastic. They’re top class mics and not really a copy of anything, despite the obvious AKG C414 heritage (more of an evolution, perhaps...)
I usually pick them over the studio’s C414 XLS, and they’re not losing out to our older C414 B-ULS either in my mind (and I like the B-ULS very much too.)

That said, the Warm 87 MK 2 received a very glowing review in the current SOS.
We have a couple of the older U87 that these mics are trying to cop, and I wouldn’t like to be without them. I wouldn’t call the Austrian 818 an inferior mic to a vintage U87 in any way, but they don’t quite do the same thing. The OC818 is perhaps more versatile, and maybe slightly on the more neutral side, but it doesn’t do the typical ‘Neumann’ thing that the U87 does, which can be so effective on voices. That said, the OC818 is a lovely vocal mic in its own right, with it’s own certain magic, in a different way to the Neumann.

I mentioned the OC818 but it’s the more basic 018 that’s really under consideration as it’s a very similar price to the WA87.

I can see why you're "in two minds", but I can't help. I don't know the timbre of your voice, or the acoustics of your recording environments, or the style of your music, or your personal tonal preferences. That makes it impossible to recommend one mic over another.

These two are both perfectly competent mics, but in different ways and with different characters.

Your only sensible option is to try both... And then you'll have some experience and basis to help you make a decision on which suits your needs best.

Personally, I'd favour the OC18 for a range of reasons (none based on their sound)...
