2 pieces of the same gear, different sonic signature?

Postby heavenorlasvegas » Thu Jun 03, 2021 8:38 pm

so what can influence the sonics of a piece of gear besides the circuits that make it up? especially in vintage gear...

is it rotting components?

I have 2 tandberg 12-41 reel to reel tape machines and one has a super thick, and gooey sonic print and the other not so much...

If you're talking magnetic tape, then bias setting, rec/rep EQ, flux level, head gap width, head alignment and, obviously, the type and quality of the tape itself will all influence the sound character quite dramatically... And then all the usual ageing electronics issues.

In addition to the things that Hugh mentioned, how clean are the heads and have they ever been demagnetised?

Not forgetting, how much wear have the heads seen?

thanks for your replies all. the heads look pretty worn and not sure if theyve been demagnatized.
