although i have used digital multitrack machines and have used acid on my pc for several years i am quite unsure what to do next.
i want to spend less than £400 ( absolute upper case limit ) on a laptop but i am intending on using it a lot for recording through microphones and direct from instruments.
what factors should i be taking into consideration?

The onboard audio won't be up to the job, so you're going to need an external interface. Is that included in your £400? If it is then you're cutting things awfully tight!
