Calling Tannoy Reveal 8D owners

Postby dickiefunk » Thu Apr 15, 2010 8:14 am

Hi,

I have a pair of Tannoy Reveal 8D's and I've been using them with an Echo Layla 3G and Focusrite Saffire PRO24 DSP.

I've noticed that there is a fair amount of hiss coming from them. I'm using balanced leads.

Anyone else having this this problem?

I use Tannoy 8Ds. No hiss problem here.

Is the hiss there with no connection into the speaker?
Do both speakers produce the same amount of noise?
How are you attenuating the signal to the speakers?

I used to connect digitally from my Fireface, but these days I use a pair of analogue outputs through a Furman monitor controller. Either way I’ve had no trouble.

Hi Elf,

I've tried the monitors un-plugged and still get some hiss through them.
I have the attenuation on the back of the 8D's turned right down.
They are connected to my Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP using balanced cables.

The hiss isn't overwhelming or anything it is just noticeably louder than a friends Mackie HR824's! These were virtually silent when nothing was being played back!!

Are the Tannoy's known for having a little excess hiss?

You will always get some residual noise from any amp, but it certainly shouldn't be noticeable - and will be inaudible when you have audio coming through.

If I get my ear right up to my Tannoys I can hear a faint hiss, but nothing at all worrying and no worse than any other monitoring system I've used. As long as the hiss is about the same in both speakers I can't imagine there's anything too much to worry about.

Your mate's speakers might show less hiss because their internal amp is at a lower output level - and might be running with less headroom.
