Sound effect libraries

Postby Bazza » Sun Apr 25, 2010 11:38 am

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any decent bread and butter sound effect libraries? I have been using the apple loops that come bundled with logic as well as some from the Zero G pro pack and these are more than adequate quality for my needs. I've also been using soundsnap which can be good but very American (for voices etc)

A hundred to a couple of hundred quid would be about the budget level.

Cheers

Worth checking out soundeffectslibrary.com for one of stuff you can't find anywhere else and won't cost a fortune. Given that the US is a much bigger market than the UK it's no wonder that a lot of the sfx libs focus on American voices rather than those intoning the Queens English - you might have to work around that by using whatever local talent you can dig up.

The Digital Juice sfx libs are good value for money - they don't retail anymore, but if you register on their website and then wait for their special offers to come along you won't have to wait too long before one of the 3 volumes become available. There's shedloads of FX on them and I'd say are best value for money as bread and butter libs. The 'Red Box' from Best Service falls into the same category, but is a bit more limited.

If time allows, you're going to find doing your own fx often gets you closest to what you need - even with about 40Gb of fx in my database, I still fond myself having to rig up a mic to get the effect that's actually going to fit a given situation, unless it's a very generic need that has to be met.

There are plenty of other online free sfx libs - have you investigated them?

Thanks for that Reid, I'll check those out (as well as invest in a (Blue Mikey extension for the iPhone)
