USB/MIDI Expression Pedal

Postby pblais » Mon Oct 22, 2012 4:42 pm

Hi. I am brand new to this forum so I dont know if this is the correct place for this... If it is not, please let me know and move it if needed.
Recently, I read and article on the SOS mag by Robin Bigwood on control surfaces. I recently bought the 3 Korg Nano series devices. But, my question is this: There were no foot-expression pedals reviewed. I have been looking for a pedal that is MIDI/USB and I don't want to pay big bucks for it. Do you have any idea where I can find something like that?

Thank you in advance

Hi clavguy - welcome to the forum.

I don't think you'll find many of those, though Eowave do one...

How about the Line 6 FBV Express MkII? It has an expression pedal and 4 footswitches, the expression pedal also has a toe switch so you can switch it between two different MIDI controllers. There is free software that allows you to edit it extensively too. All in all a very powerful solution.

Hi clavguy, and welcome to the SOS Forums! 8-)

I suspect the main reason why expression pedals weren't covered is that many controller keyboards have suitable sockets to plug in a simple 'volume' pedal to generate MIDI expression data.

This is a far cheaper solution than buying a pedal with USB or MIDI functionality built in - all four of the keyboards in my studio have expression pedal sockets!

If you want some recommendations for suitable expression pedals, have a read of my FAQ on the subject here, since there are two standards:

Models are available from under £20, for instance this one from Thomann:

Hope this helps!

Thank you all very much. Martin's reply got me thinking. I did some research into my Alesis QS7 keyboard and found that it has two "pedal" inputs in addition to the sustain pedal input. Those two pedals can be re-mapped to whatever MIDI CC# I want. I tested this out last night and it works great...

Once again, thank you all for the help.

I was googling the software download for my USB expression pedal interface and landed here by chance. Perhaps this device is what you need:

Ashby have something similar on this side of the pond - wish someone would do a two channel one though.

It's an old thread, but there's still not a lot about, so while the topic has returned I'll also mention Audiofront.
