Why have Waves plug-ins gotten such bad press?

For everything after the recording stage: hardware/software and how you use it.

In my opinion, if something is around long enough, then it will eventually get some bad press. most of the bad press is nonsense. it comes from people who do not know what they are talking about and just like to bash things.
I'm not a Waves Fanboy, i tend to use other plugins, but Waves make good effect plugins and i do use a few of them, along with other manufactures.

You do not survive in this very competitive field without making quality stuff

The way the company treat its users is pretty shabby. As for the quality of the plugins, they are (for 2018 standards) mostly bang average and incredibly overpriced.
