Digital Tape Retrieval

Postby trunkdog » Thu Nov 08, 2018 3:58 pm

Could some kind soul help me in getting the data off some old tapes? We have:
Sony DT-120
BASF Digital Master 936 / DA 60 MP

Will I need a DAT drive, Tascam 388, etc?

TIA,

Barry

You will need a DAT machine in working order for the Sony tape - which are becoming rarer but can still be found for not too much money. You'll need a Tascam DA-88 or DA-38 for the BASF tape. There are specialists that offer transfer services for these tapes - Richard Hess maintains a list of North American people who can do this at

If you are in the UK or Europe send me a PM.

Thx JP, just now seeing your response. I'll continue to do my homework here. Thx for the link. Just trying to help an old friend here in the USA. I also have some older DDS4 tapes with raw data from my old CADCAM (engineering) system backups. I'm hoping the DAT drive I ultimately buy will read both the DDS & the Sony. Perhaps I get lucky and find a Tascam locally.

As far as I know, only certain DDS drives with specially modified firmware which were supplied with Silicon Graphics workstations could read audio DAT's. All other DDS drives are data only.

Reasonable, professional and courteous.
Just don't expect him to drop what he's doing to dust off your tapes.
