It is surprising how much difference (well it surprised me anyway when I first did my room) even a few strategically placed absorbers makes. You have a better reference than I did though with your HD650s + Sonarworks. In any small recording space a certain degree of pragmatism is essential, especially if it serves double duty as a living space too.
You could try hanging some folded duvets around the place to work out if the difference is sufficient to justify installing some permanent traps and absorbers.
