De essers were useful when you had tape an no easy control on individual sections of the vocal. They're still good for live settings.

But in a DAW, the easiest thing to do is to automate a fade-down or gain-down move directly on the waveform of the track. It's very easy to "see" the esses on the waveform and then you just draw a fader dip on them.

Some de-essers are much better than others. Worth trying a few on demo to find the one that does what you want and is easy to set up. The one that comes with Logic I find very hit and miss, for example, but the one in Waves's Scheps Channel is excellent and really easy to use.

The other thing I find with looking at sibilants is that if you process to much you can actually make the problem sound worse. So try backing off the setting a bit and listening with fresh ears.

Just occasionally I find on playback/editing that a series of narration tracks have sibilance that wasn't apparent when recording.

With over an hour of spoken word, individual edits aren't practical.

I use Spitfish and find it does what's wanted, just taming the sibilance to an acceptable level. Some experimentation is, of course, required. Presets aren't always the answer. :)
