Free to use: The Wilhelm Scream – remastered

Hi all!

We just finished a project where the idea was to remaster the most beloved sound effect in film, The Wilhelm Scream, and make it free for everyone to use in their own productions. It’s been a great project, but the thinking behind it has been to adapt the scream so that it will be optimized for modern soundsystems that we have today. Simply, to keep the joke running in the future. The effect is open source and available for everyone that want’s to play around with it :)

So what have we done? The scream was recorded in 1951, and the recording has always been quite “bad”. So we gave the original sound effect a fuller and cleaner sound. For instance, by removing background sounds that interfered, sharpened the frequences and reduced the amount of distortion that was present in the original. We also added some reverb to give it more room.

It would be great to hear what you guys think about it! You can hear the remasters here -> https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

So ubiquitous is the Wilhelm Scream, it became the subject of a Sounding Off a couple of years ago!

There's an interesting titbit in there about another similarly over-used effect in there too, called Castle Thunder (which, like the Wilhelm Scream, I couldn't stop hearing in films after I'd learnt of it).

Cheers!

Chris

Even weirder, as soon as I saw your words about Castle Thunder, I could 'hear' the sound inside my head.

It may be a total cliché, but evokes such strong horror film imagery that it makes sense to continue using it, however poor the recording quality ;)
