AKG712 how are they after four years of burn-in ?

For everything after the recording stage: hardware/software and how you use it.

DT880 user here. I ended up using them over the HD650s as they were more comfortable on longer location recording projects and I basically only wanted to get sued to one set of headphones. The 650s were more neutral, but I have no problem working with the 880s.

Can’t comment on AKGs sorry.

Thanks Bob. How do you find the bottom end on the dt880s ?

Instant gratification is actually pretty good. It's fast as well.

I partially  justified the price thinking of the time and money I would not spend fine tuning the rooms, even though the rooms were good to mix in, but not great. I would have to build my own traps, hang them, and then possibly modify them. Lots of driving for materials etc.
so I figured I saved money. How’s that for a fantasy justification?
Besides I haven’t upgraded my original monitors for almost 20 years so again this saved me money, although if I had the dough I’d buy some of the awesome nearfields that have been reviewed here in the past year.

Well I put them on my head and play something through them and ....... that's not what you meant though is it?

The bottom end is a little hyped and overall the sound is not as open as with the HD650s.

I don't use headphones for mixing - I use my PMCs for that, but I do use them for final checking of projects where I'm wanting a different and focussed listening environment to check final mixes.

And as said above, I use them for monitoring of concert recordings where I deem comfort to be a priority. On the Sunday I have four hours of concert to cover - maybe I'll take a set of speakers in too.........

As an aside the K702 is currently just £99 new from Amazon. They were £146 when I bought them back in 2015 (and now just about nicely burned in ;) ) and I thought them a bargain then! Amazing value.

 Thanks CC. That should help towards the mini-Sams' textbook fund.

And I am encouraged to hear that the initial harshness should be over by 2024, by which time we will be able to stop worrying about audio quality while we fret over flooding, forest fires and the sudden appearance of migrating polar bears in Darlington.
