I have option to use Allen Heath QU-16 or Focusrite Clarett 8preX for studio band recordings. Which would you use and why?

If I needed more than 8 mic preamps I'd use the QU16...

The QU has physical faders, as a live sound guy (and old analogue guy too) I have to admit to liking faders so I'd use the QU16 whether I needed the extra inputs our not.

7-8 mics often go for just the drums so for a full band you definitely need more channels than what the Clarett gives you.

Thanks for replies. I’m wondering more about sound quality. I typically dont use more than 8 mics at a time for tracking (unless I want full band live sound). And I could add a Octo pre 8 for more channels. I track rhythm guitar, bass, vocals, drums, lead guitar and any other instruments all separately (Unless I want live band sound). I dont need more than 8 mics for drums (but can always use more). It seems Clarett is high quality preamps and analog/digital conversion. I mean it has one job and does it well. The Qu-16 is also high quality, but does much more and is designed more for live sound. It is nice to have faders though, but QU still uses the gain setting for recording levels. So it’s more a question of which is better for quality recordings.

I suspect either will give you the quality you require used correctly (i.e. with properly implemented gain structure). For me the question would come down to "do you want faders?"

8 mic's? for just drums!? I can remember when 8 mic’s would be more than enough for a whole band! plus three orchestras!!!

One tiny thing worth knowing about the Qu16 is that the sample rate is fixed at 48Khz. I wish it was changeable but I do like mine a lot nonetheless.
