[Ah, you edited your reply between me writing this. You said it was NOT digital. So my reply to that was...]

Sorry, but it is.

From the intro in the manual itself '10 input digital mixer with 10 line and 8 mic inputs ' (second feature on the Introduction page).

https://www.tascam.eu/en/docs/Model12_Manual.pdf

One the sound comes in, it goes through an ADC and after that, all eq and effects etc are purely digital.

This is interesting.

The manual for the 12 says clearly "digital mixer", whereas for the 16 and 24 they're "analogue mixers" with digital recorders.

A quick look at the block diagram for the 16 shows it to be an analogue mixer, with analogue comp and EQ, with sends to the digital recorder seemingly taken from before those.

Yes, they are different beasts, they just look the same.

Still totally stuck on what to get.

I was looking at the Presonus 16.0.2 USB but it's only 4 out.

The Soundcraft 12MTK or 22MTK are interesting, but no daw control.

If I could find something that had 10/12 in/out (or 16 etc, depends on cost, not bothered about size), and daw control, that would be perfect... :(

X32 Producer, 22 analogue inputs, 14 analogue outputs, 32/32 USB I/O. Very flexible and expandable (up to 40/22 simultaneous physical I/O). The only downside is that it costs £1022. TBH if size is not an issue I'd spend the extra £133 and buy the Compact for it's LCD scribble strips.

As you've already expressed an interest in the X-Touch, I would suggest getting a Behringer XR18 to go with it.

You'd then have an 18 in/out digital mixer/audio interface, both controllable by the X-Touch, 1 button push lets you switch between DAW control and mixer control.

I use this combination for studio and live applications. The stage box format also means that you don't have to have it taking up space on your desk.

Regards, Simon.

Yes, I've been looking at those. Just a bit out of budget along with the SM7B but could be possible to find a way...

I looked at it in some detail a couple of weeks ago but not since, so will give it another examination. Thanks.

Thanks Simon, so you use an XR18 along with the X-Touch? I only want it for studio, not live. Any particular limitations or issues I should be aware of?

I'll take a look in to it in more detail.

Thanks again

None that would affect use in the studio. I had to install an extension to get it to work properly with Reaper, but that's all. I use an additional monitor so I can have the X-Edit mixer app displayed on one and my DAW software displayed on the laptop screen.

The in built WiFi is not reliable enough for live use, but again that wouldn't be a problem in the studio. I originally bought the X-Touch for use live, as it's much easier to hit a physical mute button or pull down a physical fader than faffing about with the trackpad.

Thanks Simon.

Well, this is interesting.

An X32 compact has gone on sale locally today second hand (about a year) allegedly in perfect condition, for 1000 euros (Thomman price is new is 1299 euros)...

Anything I should look out for?

Check the warrantee with Behringer and if they'll transfer it. I've had mine for a few years and it has been great and I'm not aware of any specific issues (Thomann reported lower than average returns for the X32 during it's first couple of years of production so reliability is generally good). There is a very good X32 user community here https://community.musictribe.com/search?query=X32&type=all but the forum software is truly horrible....

Thanks. I know you've followed this discussion (although I don't expect you to remember all my requirements!) but apart from being digital ;) anything jump out as not fitting the bill for what I'd like?

Again, no worries if it's not immediately obvious, you're not my personal sales rep ;)

Many thanks

Without rereading the whole thread nothing springs out, I'm just a happy X32 user (and early adopter). The DAW control setup is not intuitive but I haven't tried the X-Touch so not sure how intuitive that is either. I'm thinking of moving fully into the box using the X32C as a surface but haven't taken that step yet, at present I use it as I would a mixer and outboard rack.

Other than that it either needs a computer or a recording card (which replaces the included USB interface card) to record more than stereo.

But if you're up for the initial steepish learning curve I'd say go for it. I have everything set up so that getting ready to start recording a new tune takes as long as my old Mac Pro takes to boot up. Once it's running I have channels assigned and labeled both in Reaper and on the X32 and a dozen or so instruments and mics ready to go.

Thanks. It would be connected to my computer so that's not an issue. Just been reading about the firmware 4 routing upgrade. Sounds good.

We may have a winner...

Any idea if the preamps can handle the sm7b without a booster?

Not sure, they are decent but I think the SM7B used for speech needs a fair bit of gain so I would guess possibly not.

Thanks. I may actually have to compromise on the mic a bit anyway - but that is easier to upgrade in the near future when funds are a bit better. And if I can manage both, and need a fethead, they are only 66 euros or so. Need to doing some sums ;)

I run it as a Mackie Control, and I can report it just... works - at least it does with Cubase. It really was a just a case of plug in and go.

I've also used it with my XR18, but I didn't find it so useful in that context.

I've read a bit and watch a few videos. Am I right in thinking to setup transport controls for Logic I'd use the Assign buttons?
