Need advice for guitar tone

Hello everyone, first post. I recently completed a full length solo album. It's heavy rock.

I am trying to mix it myself. My main problem is with the guitar tone. I did direct in guitars to an M-Audio box with a Peavey Wolfgang guitar (I know, top notch setup.)
I am using TSE=X50 Amp sim to try to generate a distortion similar to that of the tone on Alice in Chains "Dirt" album. (Yeah, good luck buddy.)

But as I am sure you have all heard a million times, I feel like my tone sounds like a raccoon rummaging through a metal trash can. When I go in and listen to my tone, I hear this present, low 'whoosh' kind of noise almost like a jet engine if you can imagine, and I can't seem to tame it with my high pass filter. The EQ Line comes in at like +6 even with the filter on (if that means anything :/), I can't get it to 0.

Is my direct in signal simply unsalvageable due to my garbage guitar/direct in setup?

I am not good at this and appreciate your patience.

Hi and welcome! Can you put up a sample of the raw guitar sound?

Sure, do you mean just the clean, DI signal?

Sorry, I am trying to figure out why this TSE-x50 plug in is crashing my Reaper when I try to render the file.

Yes, the DI straight in. No plugins, eq, whatnot.

Thank you for your reply, here is the link to the dry signal. It's quad tracked, 2 left 2 right.

And here is a link to only one of the guitar tracks panned in the center. https://www.dropbox.com/s/048eqv8h7k57m ... r.wav?dl=0

Your direct guitar sound is fine. I just listened to "Dirt", and there's a lot of single and two note guitar lines stacked. Full chords like you're playing won't react the same way to distortion. Try playing less notes and different range and notes of the chord each pass. You probably are, but definitely run each track through it's own plugin instance, running them all together through one amp will make an unholy mess.

Also, you can eq each amp separately, or even use different models. If you run out of cpu horsepower freeze the tracks as you go.

Thank you very much resistorman for taking the time. Knowing my direct signal is fine helps me to know i'm at least on the right track!

If I can get my reaper to render without crashing, could I ask of you and others to take a listen and throw a couple of tips my way if you have the time?
