I’ve found Mike Senior’s book ‘Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio’ to be a great help. It’s a really clear step by step guide.

If your room really is bad, it will be very hard to get a good mix. Installing some treatment will really help. Can you do the majority of your work on phones and then audition your mixes in a better environment for fine adjustments (this is what I do)?

If it's any consolation, I'm pretty sure we've all been at this stage with one track or another. It's all part of the learning process. :)
