Yep. Lots and lots and lots of popular methods of listening to music are mono! M'learned colleagues have listed many... but there are more besides. Ignore mono-compatibility at your peril!

Many do... not sure about most... but that's not going to help when the user drops the phone into a glass to make it play louder... or sits it on a stand ten feet away.

That's his prerogative... but I suspect he's either misquoted or lying, either for the effect, or to misdirect...

No competent professional mix or mastering engineer would casually dismiss mono compatibility. They may be prepared to compromise it in order to favour the stereo effect, but that would be an artistic decision taken with a solid technical understanding of the inevitable consequences.
