I agree that it's unfair to pick out the banjo for such ire. We still have saxophones, steel drums. opera singers and brass sections to get rid of before we reach the banjo players... ;)

I bloody hate saxes, tenor saxes in particular, but only when they’re on their own in an arrangement... like when they’re supposed to sound all sexy and sophisticated but sound like a US sitcom theme tune. But I love them in a nice tight Stax-type section. Odd really.

Samba bands, don't forget samba bands, they commit the most heinous crimes against music one could imagine even in one's darkest nightmares....

"Arrange responsibly"

Accordions, harmonicas, djembes and ukuleles on the fire first, followed by banjo's, bongos, and theramins.

Too many ukeleles; too few bullets

In fairness I'm only having a go at banjos to distract from the fact that I've got a couple of melodeons.

Be careful, Concertina Chap may be deeply, deeply offended.

I always thought Ry Cooder's soundtrack to Southern Comfort was way better than the much more famous banjo-based musical known as Deliverance.
Every time I hear it, I just wanna squeal like a pig.

Ahem...

A classic!
I do have second thoughts about banjitar. Under torture I might actually admit they can be fun

Martin Walker wrote:Yep, that feature is a fascinating read, yet I was surprised that Billy Decker defaults to replacing the original kick drum with a custom mix of four sampled sounds, using Slate Trigger.

Martin
The irony is that he's almost certainly replacing top session drummers with samples...played by Slate's top session drummers. Who knows: maybe it's the same drummers!

And this is the kind of stuff he produces (this video comes with a Lockdown Health Warning):

Nothing wrong with that mix. I think this is the track the article is about?

Does this include Baker Street, Will You? (solo for half the song) and lots of Supertramp tracks? I prefer alto and soprano versions myself and sort of know what you’re saying about the tenor sax.
