what is your favourite vst synth

Postby paul tha other » Mon Jan 18, 2021 2:56 pm

hey guys...i use mainly vst's synths for my home recording these days..i use the korg collection a lot because i like the korg stuff in the flesh and i dont think the vst's let them down ..ive just installed the u-he stuff (i had it for ages but never got round to installing it).
i love diva and hive is very good too...they have quickly became my go-to synth when im looking for swooshy sounds and arps ...

im lookijng for a new vst synth to explore since im sitting about doing nowt apart from doing a solo album..ive used the u-he and korg stuff to death , so looking for something to freshen up my inspiration..i also have the v-station but i dont use that much.i have absynth at work but i dont really get on with it

Other than Kontakt, which is my most-used VSTi, then my current favourites are:

Synapse The Legend
Spectrasonics Omnisphere
Roli Equator 2
Steinberg Padshop

Honourable mention to Fabfilter Twin - still the first synth I pick when building a new song.

It's worth looking through the Spitfire Labs options. All free and some very interesting sounds and textures.

Reaktor makes me feel like I’ll never have enough time. A lot of the NI stuff is very cool, I like Absynth as well. As much as it interests me I’ve never really dived into synthesis enough to know properly what I’m up to though.

Aren't they sample libraries as opposed to synths?

The little time I've spent with Arturia Pigments has really impressed me.

Yes they are, sorry, should have made that clear. Just offered up as an alternative to swooshes etc.

I think what you are missing is a modern super synth.

I was averse to them for a while due to the EDM pre sets and wave table growls but soon realised that ultimately two good oscillators on any synth, bit of detune and snappy envelopes should cover most bases.

Serum was my first, and has quite a digital sound, but it makes a change to program traditional subtractive sounds on it to get a retro but modern vibe. It can be heavy on the CPU though. Dune is very good to, but recently my favourite has been Spire by reveal sound since it has a good balance between a modern sound, but able to do any traditional timbre when required.

I would no longer be happy with just accurate retro synths, nor just the modern either, but having both helps me not slip into to many 'vintage' clichés.
